INVESTIGATION OF UN-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA ACTIVITIES
IN THE UNITED STATES
BY THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES (Dies Committee)
This is volume 12 (486pp) of a 17-volume series of hearings by the Dies Committee, set up by the US House of Representatives to monitor "Un-American Activities" and foreign propaganda before and during the Second World War.
This series of Hearings is entitled:
"Investigation of Un-American Propaganda Activities in the United States - Hearings Before A Special Committee on Un-American Activities, House of Representatives, on H. Res. 282, to investigate (1) the extent, character, and objects of un-American propaganda activities in the United States, (2) the diffusion within the United States of subversive and un-American propaganda that is instigated from foreign countries or of a domestic origin and attacks the principle of the form of government as guaranteed by our Constitution, and (3) all other questions in relation thereto that would aid Congress in any necessary remedial legislation."
These hearings were held from the third session of the 75th Congress through the second session of the 78th Congress.
The dates for each volume are shown below

In order to understand our contemporary “white nationalist” and “America First” movements and their predominant themes and arguments, the persons and organizations discussed in these Hearings should be reviewed. The 1944 “Mass Sedition Trial” is also a valuable reference because many of the individuals (and their organizations and publications) who were indicted in the 1940’s were antecedents to our contemporary “white nationalist” and “America First” movements.
I do not suggest that all of these people, organizations and publications had identical viewpoints but the origins of our contemporary controversies can be seen in the disputes and political conflicts of the 1930’s thru 1980’s. It is true, however, that many of the persons and organizations listed below were racial and religious bigots.
Our current controversies over immigration (and the changing demographics of our society along with discrimination toward people of color), the status of the U.S. in the world, hostility toward international institutions or multi-lateral alliances and hostility toward the U.S. operating as the policeman of the world, and the polarization of our politics along with a sense of economic insecurity and concern about how “elites” disparage or dismiss the concerns of ordinary working Americans === all of these issues have their origins in previous decades.
